THE AIRBORNE PART OF OPERATION OVERLORD... D-DAY;

THIS

STANDARD
FOUR / POCKET
JUMP JACKET AND TROUSERS IS MADE OF 100% COTTON IN OLIVE DRAB #3 SHADE. THIS TYPE OF STANDARD
(NOT REINFORCED OR "RIGGER" MODIFIED)
PARA JUMP JACKET AND TROUSERS WAS ISSUED TO U.S. ARMY AIRBORNE TROOPS IN BOTH THE 82nd & 101st AIRBORNE DIVISIONS UNTIL THE SUMMER OF 1944. THIS PATTERN OF JACKET & TROUSERS WAS WORN FROM EARLY 1942 THROUGH THE D-DAY INVASION IN JUNE 1944. PRIOR TO OPERATION NEPTUNE (THE AIRBORNE PART OF OPERATION OVERLORD), A LARGE NUMBER OF THESE STANDARD M-42 JACKETS & ALSO THE TROUSERS WERE MODIFIED BY DIVISIONAL "RIGGERS" WITH THE ADDITION OF CANVAS TO REINFORCE THE KNEES, ELBOWS AND POCKET GUSSETS, WHICH SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASED THE DURABILITY OF THE M-42 JUMP UNIFORM. WHILE THE "RIGGER" MODIFIED JUMP UNIFORMS APPEAR IN NEARLY ALL OF THE COMBAT PHOTOS OF THE 82nd & 101st AIRBORNE DIVISION PARATROOPERS, THE STANDARD M-1942 UNIFORM WAS USED THROUGHOUT WWII AS A "WALKING OUT" OR "IN TOWN" UNIFORM; ESPECIALLY WHEN DRESS UNIFORMS WERE NOT AVAILABLE.
PLEASE NOTE:
THIS 100% COTTON STANDARD M-42 JUMP JACKET AND TROUSERS HAS

HISTORICAL NOTE
:
UNIFORM, JUMPER M-1942
The M-1942 jump uniform consisted of a specially designed coat and a set of trousers. One of the designers, Lt. General William Yarborough, who also designed the American Airborne Jump Wings and was one of the pioneers in the American Airborne operations. The M-42 jacket was tailored in 100% cotton poplin with sharply tailored sides and normally had four (4) cargo pockets that had flaps which could be snapped open or closed. The breast pockets were attached in a slightly slanted manner, which allowed access to the pockets when a paratrooper was wearing the field equipment. A 1 3/4 inch wide belt, made of the same type fabric, was fixed at the center of the back of the jacket and passed through a loop on either side at the waist. The M-1942 jacket was made to provide a certain amount of water resistance and wind proofing. The typical color of Olive Drab #3, however due to wartime demands and production variances, the actual color often differed with each production round; and the jacket often faded after use and washing.
The trousers were made of the same 100% cotton material and had loops for a belt to be worn around the waist and also inside buttons which were designed to allow suspenders to be fastened. The trousers had four (4) pockets (two on the front and two in the rear), as well as two (2) large expandable cargo pockets, each sealed with a flap (with buttons) on the outside of each thigh.
As the war progressed there were variants on the design of the M-1942 Jump Jacket and Trousers, which were often made by the Airborne unit's "riggers". These variations included leg ties to help keep the items placed inside the thigh cargo pockets secured. The "riggers" also added canvas reinforcement to the elbows of the jacket and the knees of the trousers. In addition, some troopers also added extra cargo pockets to the shoulders and the reverse side of the jacket placed below the waist belt.

Note: In addition to using a self-guided, GPS supported itinerary to visit All Five of the Landing Beaches along the Cotentin Peninsula and many of the historical locations, and museums in an around Normandy and the area near Brecourt Manor site of Lieutenant Richard 'Dick' Winters and elements of Easy Company 506th P.I.R. attack on the German field artillery. We have also visited the 82nd Airborne Division "Iron Mike" statue, which is
located next to the Bridge in La Fiere, where on the
6-9 June 1944 members of the 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment and 325th Glider Regiment fought against repeated German attacks to hold the bridge. There are also numerous life size
displays of 82nd and 101st Airborne paratroopers in the Airborne Museum in
Sainte-Mère-Église
and Dead Man's Corner Museum located in
Saint-Côme-du-Mont
(which is now part of the D-Day Experience in Carentan)
. We have also used the same travel format,
on several occasions,
to visit the Bastogne area, including the Baugnez '44 Museum, the site of the Malmedy Massacre, the 101st Airborne Museum in Bastogne, the Bastogne War Museum, the still existing foxholes of the 502nd and 506th P.I.R. and the pastoral surrounding area in Belgium. We have found both the French and the Belgian people, especially in the towns in Normandy and area near Bastogne, to be very friendly and still grateful to the Allies, especially the American forces, for their liberation, despite the huge loss of life and property damage suffered by the French and Belgian civilians. In addition, should you want to visit the area in and around Normandy or Bastogne, we would be willing to share our experiences or trip itinerary with you, which may help to make your travel through the area easier and perhaps make the historical experience more valuable.
